After a couple departments merged together, some co-workers and I came up with this page as a way to get to know our fellow employees, in a fun interactive way. I also wanted to use this a proof of concept study for accessibility and page load.
I decided to use isotope for its search function and animation ability, and since we had also used the plugin for other projects, I wanted to be able to understand it better and use additional JavaScript to improve its accessibility.
I decided to use JavaScript to create the hover functions, because with over 60 employees, the original page load had over 11mb using a traditional CSS hover. I also wanted to create a faster mobile UX and this prevented the hover images from being loaded into the mobile version. The larger modal image is also only called when the modal is activated and not loaded on mobile. Please note: For mobile widths on desktop - the page may have to be refreshed (at widths less than 468px) for the JavaScript to find the correct page width.
Modals can be difficult to navigate via screenreaders, and the page uses an aria live region to update the user of the changes happening to the page. The focus is also trapped within the modal and returns it to the launch item once the modal is closed.

Harry was previously a web developer at Unilever, Sears, and the Chicago Sun-Times before joining the web communications team, and has a B.A. in Art History and M.S. in E-Commmerce Technology from DePaul University, as well as a post-baccalaureatte in Visual Communications from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Harry and his wife were avid swing dancers and event promoters (they actually met dancing), and Harry has DJ'd at many dance events throughout the U.S., Europe, and as far away as Australia. After having their first child they currently mostly dance at home, but hope to be out tango or swing dancing soon.
Henry is one-fifth of your fabulous graphic design team here. Ours are the print pieces that engage, inform, encourage and inspire current and potential students, alums and their families. We also like taping paper to windows.
Henry was born and raised in Chicago, where he now resides. He earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University, then worked a paltry 5 years for "the Man" before rolling independent. Years to that day of incorporation, he accepted the position here.
He coached 14 seasons of youth sports — volleyball and softball. Henry is an avid cyclist, beer sampler, political junkie, hammock-tester and amateur handyman.
Juan is the digital designer for the marketing creative team. His role is to create engaging visuals for the research stories.
Juan graduated with a double major (BFA in Communication Design / Photography) from the Institute of Art and Design. Before arriving, he spent most of his career contracting as a Sr. Visual Designer for digital agencies and tech companies.
The freelancing life allowed him to do extensive travel all over the US and around the world. Many of his adventures involved riding motorcycles through challenging landscapes - including the deserts of India and riding the full length of Vietnam.

Megan joined our team as Strategic Communications Manager in January 2018. In this role, Megan manages a wide range of high-level projects that have strategic implications.
Megan was formerly the Senior Project Coordinator for Strategic Initiatives in the Office, where she supported initiatives responding to emergent, critical and legal issues. Prior to joining us, Megan worked in the non-profit and international development fields. Most recently, Megan managed program operations for a disability advocacy organization in New York.
Megan has a Bachelor's degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in International Social Work.
